Question #12

Why do you think Loomis needs to find Martha? Why do they keep searching? What does Loomis means when he says he "smells" her?

Personally, I think Loomis needs to find Martha to complete this marriage gap that has been vanished since the time Martha left her husband. The search continues for Martha because Loomis strongly believes Selig, "the people finder," will find Martha because he's very good at finding people when no one else knows where they are. When Loomis claims he "smells" Martha, he doesn't literally "smell" her, but he can feel her presence becoming closer and closer everyday, and he misses her so bad that whenever someone mentions her name, or characteristics of her, it feels as if Martha never disappered in the first place.

I believe Loomis needs to find Martha because he can't raise his daughter on his own. He can't teach a little girl like he can teach a boy. A girl needs her mother and that's why he's so desperate to find his wife. He may feel that finding his wife will give his daughter a better chance at being a young lady instead of a tom-boy.

Adding on to my previous post...Loomis means that their connection is so deep that no matter how far away Martha is, he can still her.

I agree with Ashley. Loomis cant raise thier daughter by himself, she definatly needs a mother figure and he is trying to fufill that for her by searching for his wife. He Continues to search for her because she is a very important piece to thier family. When he says that he "Smells" he is implying that he knows that she someone there.

I agree with Keshon i do think that he is trying to complete their marriage because you shouldn't just walk out on someone you need a reason to just leave. And he misses her because their love was strong and he can get that feeling that she s close.

I believe that Loomis is still searching for Martha because he still loves her and misses her dearly. Also he knows that their daughter needs her mother in her life because he cant do it alone. When he says that he smells her he means that he feels that she is around and that he will find her soon.

Loomis needs to find Martha so she can be a role model and a motherly figure to his daughter. They keep searching for Martha becuase they know that she's around somewhere and believe that Selig can find her. When Loomis says that he "smells" her, he is saying that he feels her presence and knows that she's close.

There are a few things that I can understand as to why KeShon feels the way that he does, however, majority of the post I disagree with. I do not believe that Loomis is looking for Martha to fill a marriage gap. I do not even think that he is looking for her because he misses her. It is something beyond that. Loomis does not come off as the type of person to go looking for his wife because he misses her. I believe there was an incident that occured that forced Martha to leave. I do not think that she would up and leave for no reason. I do not think that Loomis would go looking for her if she left for no reason. He would have known that she just wanted to be free. However, he looks for her continuously. I compare their situation to a slave master looking for a slave, who ran away after experiencing a life changing event. I also believe that him being able to "smell" her means that he has a gut feeling that she is close. He can feel that she has been around or is near. He probably also has mixed hints from the people around him.

I think Loomis is looking for Martha because he wants his daughter to have her mother in her life to teach her things that a man can't necessarily teach a young girl. I also believe he needs a little closure on what is happening and what will happen with their marriage. He is unsure of why she left and if she will ever come back so he sets out to find her. Loomis doesn't physically smell Martha but rather he feels her presence even though they have been apart for so many years.

I disagree that a girl being raised by a man would make her into a tomboy, that is like saying a boy raised by his mother would make him to be girly or sissy like. However I will agree with Ashley, in that having the girl's mother around to help raise their daughter would be benifitial for everyone.

Men can raise children as well as women can. Men just do it differently...

I agree with Ashley H., because a father and mother needs to mold their child together in order for the child to have a prosperous life. Loomis knows that he needs Martha in order to mold his daughter into a respectful and responsible lady.

Loomis wants to find Martha because he misses her and he needs someone to take care of Zonia when she comes into her womanhood. He isn't prepared to deal with the situation and he doesn't knoww how to talk to Zonia about the changes she is experiencing with her body and feels that Martha is best to deal with it. Loomis knows that Zonia is a growing girl, which is why he told her that she need a "scrubbing", he's scared that she will come on her period. When Loomis said that he could smell Martha, he means that he is so close to finding her that he can smell her.

Loomis seems to be on a soul search for his wife, Martha. Being a single father motivates him,as he seems to want to ensure that his only child has the opportunity to experience a wholesome life with two parents. He goes to some measure to try to find his wife, such as getting advice from the "people finder" Selig; hoping in any little thing helps Loomis to keep searching. When he says he "smells" her,Loomis simply means his intuition and gut feeling tells him he was on the right track.

I agree with Keshon and Ashley H. The father has his best interest in raising the girl, but I do think its more to it than just the development of his daughter. The vibe I get from what I've read so far is that everyone is looking for something out of another person and I think it may be something else to Loomis searching for his wife.

Loomis keeps trying to find Martha because she is the mother of their child and he wants her in their daughter's life. He also keeps trying to find her because she ran off and left them by themselves. Loomis says he can smell her in the area because it's a place where it seem she may be so, he believes she's in the area somewhere.

Loomis has a feeling that Martha is near. He can smell her in the sense that he has intuition that she is closer to him now than ever before. After Loomis finds Martha, he can complete his journey and move forward with his life.
