I think the advice Bertha gave Mattie is still good today. She informed her that men basically need to know themselves and when they're young, they don't have much of themselves to give. In today's society young men don't act like they used to. They're more distracted by other things in their lives. They're always on their own agenda. Bertha's advice should definately still apply to ladies today for the simple fact that guys are doing their own thing.

I agree with Ashley because although this story took place many years ago, it still applies today. Men are still doing what they have always been doing. Therefore, women shouldn't wait on men to take responsiblity, because when they're young they aren't really ready for life. So, again, I agree with Ashley because men are doing what men have always done and therefore women should always be prepared to take up for themselves. So, Bertha's advice to Mattie is still true.

I think that Bertha's advice to Mattie is still god today because women still have personal issues with men. In giving Mattie advice she basically told her that she cant always get attached to the men that says she is pretty because they are not good for her. She told her one day she will find that guy for her. This is still good today because women, all ages, are still looking for Mr. Right so they fall for any guys who says they are beautiful.

I think that Bertha's advice is still good today. She told Mattie that before a woman can be in a relationship with a man, they both have to know themselves, and she must wait for the right one to come around. If a woman puts all of her energy into a man then she begins to lose who she is. She needs to put energy in herself before she can put energy into anybody else. You can’t take care of somebody else if you’re not taken care of. What most woman do back then and today, especially if they have low self esteem, is fall "in love" with the first man that looks at them the right way. Women don't want to wait around and try to find the right man because they think that they are getting to old and unattractive to be an a relationship, but what they fail to realize is that the right man will love you no matter how old you are or how you look. Sadly, because some women don’t wait they never experience what true love is.

I also believe that Bertha's advice to Mattie about men can also go for today too. I think Mattie should do what Bertha said and go on without worrying about a man because that's what happen with Jack and now Jeremy is gone. Like Raycha and Ashley said men are still doing what they want to do because they feel they're young and its not time to be tied down. They say they know what they want but they don't and they stay for what they want and they're on to the next one. I don't think that women should wait because when your right one comes you aren't going to know because you are looking at the wrong instead of the right and you come first before them.

I agree with Ashley. Bertha's advice still applies today because women and men still act the same way the characters acted in the story. Men can't give much of themselves to their women, but want a good woman and women expect too much from ALL men to give all themselves to them.

Bertha's advice to Mattie is still good today and should still be followed today; although many girls don't follow this advice. Bertha advises Mattie to know herself before trying to jump back into a relationship with a man. In my opinion, this advice goes hand in hand with the advice to love yourself before you try to love anyone else. Just as no one can love you if you don't love yourself, no one can know you unless you know yourself first.

Bertha's advice is still relevent in todays society. All over the world you witness women and men troubles. Bertha's advice is stil prevelent.

I do not think the advice that Bertha gave to Mattie is good advice for today, because over time society, people, and personalities change. Men wants to show how they are the perfect partner for a certain woman. Men who know who they are know which woman they want based off of personality and character. IN today society, many men do.

Bertha's advice for Mattie was that in order for two people to be together, they must first find themselves. In Mattie's case, Jeremy was impulsive, and settling down was not his style at the moment, so there was no way to tell what he wanted out of a relationship. Bertha's advice is still good today, because in many cases people rush into relationships. some people aren't ready to settle down and get married or have children too quickly. Bertha's advice applies to today, because people need to know what they want from a relationship, and decide whether or not if they're ready to take that next step.

I think Raycha and Ashley H. have the right idea. In no way am I trying to down talk males, but sometimes they come off as being self absorbed. Bertha advised Mattie about the potential ways a man can hurt her. More often then not, a man will not take proper care or responsibility for what he has committed to. Bertha's advice is still good today. The male species has not changed, just the time. A man will walk all over you, unless you stop him in his tracks. If he thinks he can get away with it, believe me he will try.

Women and men both need to know who they are as a person before they try to get into a relationship with someone. I think the advice Bertha gave Mattie should be used today with girls. Many girls probably don’t have someone in their life to tell them to know who they are. I agree with Tara because women should know that they are more than just their looks. They have to know that a man would tell them anything they want to hear just to get with them.

The advice that Bertha gave Mattie is advice that all women can still use today. The basis of the conversation was that men around the same age as Jeremy does not have much to offer her because he has yet to really know himself. Mattie is advised to stop looking for love and let love come to her because her looking isnt going to do anything but let her life pass her by as she waits.
