The theme of binding in the play begins with Bynum when he talks of the "Secret of Life" and finding his own song. Bynum has In scene1, he says "I had the Binding song". He says he chose this song because when he was traveling all he saw was "people walking and leaving one another". He also says that he "takes the power of his song and binds them together". Therefore, Wilson uses his theme of binding through Bynum to help others find there own song. An good example would be the act of Bynum "binding" Loomis. In Act2 when Loomis tells Bynum that he doesn't like the "song" that he sings, Bynum reveal much info about Loomis. He says he can tell that Loomis was one of Joe Turner's niggers cause he "forgot how to sing his own song". This is a good example of Bynum's binding. This is also evident because even Loomis is surprised saying "How you see that? I got a mark on me?"

Binding, is the connection two people have with each other and is shown through their rlationships. The play shows the different types of bindings there are, and how they effected African Americans during that time. Seth and Bertha had the sucessful binding and marraige, Jeramy and Mattie created a binding because of social norms and Loomis shows the example of a broken bond and what it can do to a person.

I feel that binding theme in the play was about keeping people together, or in Loomis' case, keeping them lonely and in search of someone. Binding was very important in this story because it is about African Americans and who at the time were very pron to loose contact with people.

There are multiple examples of binding throughout the play the most commonly seen is marriage. For example Seth and Bertha and Martha and Loomis. But another type of binding could be seen in the binding of the old and what seems like the more recent views of shacking up in the novel. A final binding is the connection of old African culture with the American cultures. Binding is the connection or joining of two things.

I agree with Buschbacher that this theme was about keeping African Americans in contact with one another. So much of the play was about finding ones self (Loomis) or finding someone.

I agree with Austen's response because binding is a connection between people. Maybe it's keeping two people together or helping draw one person near another. His example of binding or the affect of binding with Loomis is one of his best examples becuase in a way, Loomis's "journey" and binding was the main theme or the focus of the play.

I believe that the answers that were given to this question were very true. I to believe that Breatha and Seth were a great example of binding but this can also relate to Loomis and Martha to. This is because even though they are far apart they are still in a relationship with each other.

Example of being bound to someone, or something in certain cases, are fluent throughout the story. Mattie and Herald bind themselves to other people who for the most part were no where to be found for years. This theme goes hand in hand with the characters finding their identity. The idea of once being enslaved and suppressed holds on to the characters in the story. “For each of the characters, that quest for humanity is for a form of completeness which their circumstances, and history, has denied them. It may be economic security or fair employment practices, or a mate, or a family." (96)
