It seems like the only one sympathetic to Jeremy's perdicament is Bertha because, to me, she seems like the nice person who always offers sympathy and help. However, Seth is not. Seth feels that Jeremy came from the South to misbehave so he deserves to be arrested.

The only person was sympathetic to Jeremy being arrested was Bertha. Like Nakia said, she seems like she doesnt judge people based on their decisions and she's nice. Like,Seth he's happy that he's in jail because he doesn't want people acting crazy and being drunk in his house. He doesn't tolerate that in his house. He also feels that he's putting African Americans in a bad position about acting drunk.(2462)

When Seth and Bertha first found out that Jeremy had been arrested by the Piney Boys for being drunk, Bertha as revelaed in the text was the only person who showed him sympathy. She knew that he was a good boy who had a made a bad character judgement by getting drunk, while Seth believed that he was just acting foolish.

I agree with Nakia and Ariel. Bertha has a mother-like response to the fact that Jeremy has been arrested by Mr. Piney's boys for being drunk. Bynum, on the other hand sounds like a mentor and s close friend of Jeremy, who is very optimistic about Jeremy coming home soon. Seth does not care, he is the type of man who shows minimal emotion towards others.

It appears in the text (2462) that Bertha is simpathic towards Jermey' situation. But I disagree with those who say that Bynum is simpathic towards Jeremy. I view Bynum after what we have read so far in the book as a elementary/childlike figure in the book.

I agree with Mariah that Bertha is sympathetic to Jeremy. This is shown in the the way she talks to him at times it may be straight forward but you can see the sicereness in it.

The text clearly shows that Bertha is sympathetic for Jeremy going to jail. She does not think that Jeremy deserves to be punished. Even though Jeremy went to jail for getting drunk and acting a fool, he was just set free. He hasn't even gotten a good chance to be free witout any trouble. Bertha also knows that it is hard for an African American to be understood in those times. Seth, on the other hand, does not feel sorry for Jeremy at all. He think that it is his fault he is in the situation he is in. Seth believes that people deserve the punishments of their actions. He also believes that Jeremy fits the steryotype of a "nigger" in that time. He believes that most young males in tat time behave in that way.

Bertha is the only one who actually cares about the Jeremy getting himself into trouble. When this whole situation his brought up everyone else is like "so what, that how he always acts, and he did all that himself".<--(Seth)

In reference to Tierra's comment, I think that Seth feels that most young males who recently migrated from the South are like that, not all young black men period. This whole situation reminds me of the whole South Side/West Side debate where people felt that West Siders were black people fresh from the country and they were therefore viewed as ignorant.

Bertha is sympathetic with Jeremy and his predicament. Seth is not because he believes what he did was stupid and that he deserves what he got.

Bertha is the only one who is sympathetic to jeremy. I agree with Nakia and Olivia because she seems like she's a nice person who wants the best for everyone. I also agree with Ali because she knows that Jeremy is a good boy who made a bad decision.
